Different Materials of Heavy Duty Slings

When you're looking at heavy duty lifting straps and slings, there are a variety that you'll come across that are used for tree work. One of the most important things to keep in mind is the material that your slings are made of. Here are the most common types of heavy duty slings you'll see available.

Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope slings are made from twisted metal wires, creating a wire rope. These slings provide a higher level of heat resistance and strength than some of the others available.

Chain Slings

Chain slings are made from chains that change shape to the load that's being lifted. They're very versatile but aren't as strong as other options. They are at risk for damage should they receive a heavy shock or impact, and could fail.

Web Slings (Nylon Slings, Polyester Slings, Etc.)

Web slings refer to slings made from webbing materials. These synthetic materials are preferable in the world of tree work. Nylon lifting slings provide flexibility and strength. For the most part, heavy duty nylon slings or a polyester sling are going to be the best for tree work.

Types of Heavy Duty Slings

When you're selecting your slings for tree work, it's important that you know what each type of sling should be used for. There are a number of specialty slings used when you're working in trees. Check them out below and learn which ones are best for different jobs.

Endless Loop Slings

Endless loop slings are a nylon sling. They're very lightweight and are great for rigging redirects when girth hitches. They can also be used to attach limbs to a speedline setup. This allows for fast removal of limbs.

Dead Eye Sling

Dead eye slings are slings that have a dead eye spliced into them. These are used to reduce the slop in your rigging system and are great when used for blocks. They're easily attached to trees or limbs using a choker hitch.

Loopie Sling

A loopie sling is a large adjustable loop. Loopie slings are spliced from hollow braided rope. This allows part of the loop to be spliced through the other. When weight is put on the sling, it tightens down on itself and becomes secure.

Whoopie Sling

A whoopie sling is a cross between a dead eye sling and a loopie sling. Whoopie slings are best used on the ground and assist in lowering limbs that are being removed. A whoopie sling, like the loop sling, is spliced through itself, but it has a dead eye on one end.
