How Do I Know What Size Files My Chainsaw Chain Needs?

This is an excellent question and one that comes with a few different answers. Not all chainsaw files are the same, after all. Like any of your other tools, it's important to keep your saw chain up to par. Here's a basic guide on finding the right chainsaw files to sharpen your teeth.

Determine Your Chain Type

All chains come with a chain type. This information can be found on your chain, or in your chainsaw's manual. On the chain, the information will be on the cutter link. These are some common ID numbers, their pitch, and the corresponding file sizes.

  • 25, 91 or 1/4" pitch - File size 4.0 mm or 5/32 inches
  • 90 - File size 4.5 mm or 11/64 inches
  • 20, 21, 22, 95 or 0.325" pitch - File size 4.8 mm or 3/16 inches
  • 16, 18, 26, 27, 72, 73, 75 or 3/8" / 0.404" pitch - File size 5.5 mm or 7/32 inches

The most reliable way of choosing file size is by using the ID number. Pitch can be used as a last resort, though.

What Tools Do I Need to Sharpen my Chainsaw Chain?

When you're getting ready to sharpen, make sure that you have all of the following tools on hand.

  • File guide
  • Flat file
  • Round file
  • Depth gauge guide
  • Chainsaw vise
  • Gloves
  • Goggles

A sharp chainsaw is the best way to enjoy the work you'll be doing out in the field. Without a sharp tool, you may have to submit to defeat. The best way to keep your tool up to par is by having the right equipment to maintain it.
