Video Recording Tips

Resolution

Most video cameras and modern smart phones film in a standard HD resolution. Record in one of the following resolutions for best results (ordered in smallest frame size to largest):

  • 720p (1,280 wide x 720 tall)
  • 1080i or 1080p (1,920 wide x 1,080 tall)
  • 1440p (2,560 wide x 1,440 tall)
  • 2K (2,048 wide x 1,536 tall)
  • 4K or 2160p(3,840 wide x 2,160 tall)

Remember: The higher the resolution, the larger the file size.

Audio

There usually are not many audio settings to mess with - just make sure to take a test video to ensure you can be heard easily in your environment.

Try not to record audio near sources of high noise, such as highways, chippers, chainsaws, or toddlers.

If you have a microphone you can plug in and use - awesome! Just make sure you take a test video and it works!

Cinematography

If you're filming with a phone, make sure you film in landscape mode! It looks better!

Try not to film with a bright light source directly behind your subject, or you won't be able to see them. Also, if you're filming someone outside, try not to make them stare into the sun! Unless you have the right photography equipment, it's usually best to film someone outside if they are standing in the shade.

If you have a tripod it helps greatly to keep your video steady. If you can't use a tripod just make sure you're using both hands to hold the camera.

Sharing Video

Video files can be very large, so large that you might not be able to email them the file to someone. If your phone or computer asks you if you want to make the video smaller in order to share it, look for a different route of sharing - your video might be compressed to a state where no one can see all of your hard work.

One work-around is to upload your video to Youtube and share the video link. You can set your video to 'unpublished' or 'private' and no one will be able to see your video unless you give them the link.

Another way to share videos is by using www.WeTransfer.com to share files up to 2gb without being required to create an account.
