It's time for Scenario 2! Everything that you need to know is below.

You and your crew have been called in to prune a large tree in back of a residential yard. The owner wants some lower limbs removed to give his garden more sun, so the climber - Mandy Danger - goes into the tree and starts cutting with her brand new chainsaw. The tree inspection shows that there are no major issues with the tree.

Mandy limb-walks out on a low, healthy limb to start the pruning. She lanyards-in and grabs her new chainsaw - but it's not tuned up correctly and is over-idling. As she swings the chainsaw from her hip she hits her climbing line with it - severing both sides of the line. Since Mandy was so excited about using her new chainsaw, she didn't set up her lanyard right, so it is slack.

When the climbing line is cut, Mandy falls forward - her foot getting caught in the union she was standing on. The lanyard being slack, he foot is taking the full weight of her body. She's screaming for help and saying that she felt a pop or crunch in her ankle and that it feels like it's being torn apart.

Scenario Specifications

  • The victim is lanyarded into a healthy limb 15' to 30' off the ground.
  • The victim is using a MRS system and attached to a standard ring-and-ring friction saver at an ideal location
  • The main MRS climbing line is cut and unusable
  • The full weight of the climber is on her leg
  • The lanyard is secured, but slack
  • There are no ladders available and bucket trucks cannot get into the area
  • Neither end of the climber's rope is reachable from the ground

More Specifications

  • The victim must be lowered to the ground for this scenario
  • The victim is unable to pull themselves up
  • If you are using a dummy it should be pretty easy to hang the dummy by its ankle, but feel free to use a strap/carabiner to secure it there
  • If you are using a log, make sure it has a T-shirt or something else on it so we know which side is supposed to be up, and definitely use some type of strap/sling as a back up to secure the logs 'ankle' to the union where the imagined victim is caught.
